Mount Royal is a community in Calgary originally founded in 1904. It is one of the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods, and was originally built for American-born businessmen. As of 2006, the population of Mount Royal was still made up of almost 30% American immigrants. Despite its name, the community is not the site of Calgary’s Mount Royal University.
Since its inception the community has had an exclusive character, which it has retained to this day. In its early development restrictions were placed on the type of home that could be built on the hill overlooking the Elbow River Valley. Primarily mansions of brick and sandstone were constructed for the railroad barons that settled the area. Today many of these stately homes still exist, and are among the most coveted property in the city. There are also a collection of contemporary estates to go along with the older homes, producing one of the most exquisitely picturesque neighborhoods in town.
Residents of Mount Royal do not lack for anything, as the community is only a short walk away from the downtown core and all of the amenities and services of the inner-city. Those who enjoy the breathtaking view of the Bow and Elbow Rivers can easily get out and enjoy the land from up close, as there are many kilometers of pathways running throughout the neighborhood and connected to the rest of the city.
17th Avenue, Calgary’s most popular strip mall and home of all the city’s upscale lifestyle boutiques, is close at hand for residents of Mount Royal who need only make the short walk or drive to enjoy some of Calgary’s best fine dining establishments, and much more.
For those who prefer to get their recreation indoors, the Talisman Centre is nearby, the city’s largest and most popular wellness center. At the Talisman Centre there is something for everyone, including a newly installed workout station that looks out onto the river.
Because Mount Royal is one of the city’s most affluent areas, the price of homes for sale in the area tends to be high. An average home might sell for around $1.5 million dollars, while some of the more luxury estate properties would go for between $2 and 4 million.
